The Waukegan High School JROTC drill team finished second overall in the Unarmed Challenge Level Division last weekend at the 2016 National High School Drill Team Championships in Daytona, Fla.
The team took second place in the unarmed inspection competition, where they were examined for uniformity and tested on military knowledge and current events. The team finished third in the unarmed exhibition drill competition, where they performed regulation drills with added moves, and fourth in the armed exhibition team competition.
According to a statement from Waukegan Public School District 60, the competition is the first time the team has brought home an overall trophy. The second place overall finish also means the team will be moved up to the Master’s Level next year.
In individual performances, sophomore Cadet Staff Sergeant Gabrielle Mendoza finished first above more than 800 competitors in the unarmed knock-out competition.
