Students at Lake Forest Academy volunteered en masse April 28 as part of the school’s annual Service Learning Day.

Some of the school’s 435 students spent the day cutting brush in the Lake County Forest Preserves or sorting food donations at the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The football team moved sand bags in Des Plaines to help stop flooding while the choir performed for seniors at Sedgebrook Retirement Community in Lincolnshire.

In all, students went to 22 locations throughout Lake County.

“The idea is teaching citizenship and that youth can be a resource to our community,” said Sarah Collins, director of service learning at Lake Forest Academy.

The Service Learning Day has been taking place for more than 20 years, Collins said.

“This is a day to step back from academics and think about themselves in the larger community and think about the larger world,” said Grace Kim, a spokeswoman at Lake Forest Academy.
