An Aurora man faces a minimum of 15 years in prison after he recently admitted to having nearly 2 kilograms of cocaine during a 2013 traffic stop, court records show
Rigoberto Ayala-Villareal, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance during a hearing before Kane County Judge John Barsanti. Villareal faces a sentencing range of 15 to 60 years in prison for the Class X felony conviction. He remains in Kane County Jail with a sentencing hearing scheduled for June 16.
According to authorities, Aurora police found two packages of cocaine worth about $200,000 inside Villareal’s vehicle after a traffic stop on Lake Street in November 2013. Police reported that Villareal had a suspended license at the time of the stop.
Villareal’s attorney previously, and unsuccessfully, argued that police had no reason to make the traffic stop or conduct a search because officers did not have a warrant or consent to do so.
