George Lucas might like the crowd expected to gather May 7 in Palos Heights.

That’s because many of the participants in the Elim Christian Services 6th Annual Eagles’s Wings 5k “run, walk or roll” are expected wear costumes of characters from Lucas’ Star Wars movies. Star Wars is the theme of this year’s fundraiser for Elim Christian Services, which provides educational, vocational and therapeutic services to children and adults with special needs.

The run starts at the agency’s office at 13020 S. Central Ave. before traveling to nearby streets and returning to the agency. Participants may choose to walk, run or use a wheelchair in either the timed 5k or the untimed 1 mile course on Elim’s campus. Another option, new this year, is a walk route for families with individuals who have sensory needs but need to avoid the crowds.

Entry fees are $20. Donations also are collected for the event.

Elim hopes to raise more than $80,000 through this event to fund iPads for both its school and adult programs, sensory items for students with autism, an pediatric standing device and a SMART board.

Last year, about $61,000 was raised to help more than 900 children and adults with disabilities served by Elim, according to Lisa Van Der Bill, physical therapist and Elim Eagles’ Wings 5K committee chairwoman.

The money raised in 2015 included help with an accessible ramp for the agency’s stage, 120 new chairs, new outdoor exercise space for students with autism, 12 computer carts, new stand-up lift for our adults, support of Elim’s outreach program and iPads for speech therapy.

Organizers of the run expect about 1,000 participants at this year’s event. Last year, 849 people joined the cause.

“The annual Elim 5K is more than just a run and a fundraiser, it is a celebration of the Elim community and what God is doing through this ministry,” Van Der Bill said. “This event changes attitudes about individuals with disabilities, helping to build more inclusive communities.”

The 5K is organized by a team of 15 Elim staff, who volunteer their time to plan, promote and implement the event.

All registered participants will receive a free T-shirt. Kids will have the opportunity to use a free pre-race obstacle course.
