Gary Police are searching for a man who escaped from police during a Tuesday night shootout at Lake Shore Dunes Apartments in Gary after being arrested and handcuffed.

Police are seeking 28-year-old Kevin S. Brown Jr., who was arrested while officers were trying to take another man into custody.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, the Gary MAG Unit was monitoring 5800 Kennedy Terrace inside the Lake Shore Dunes Apartment complex with the intention of arresting DaMond Gregory, 27, who was wanted on several outstanding felony warrants including cocaine dealing in Porter County, domestic battery in Marion County and driving while suspended in Lake Station.

After Gregory and Brown walked out of the building and entered a vehicle, police approached. Brown then got out of the passenger side and shot at officers, according to police. After a brief standoff, Gregory surrendered to the Gary SWAT team without further incident.

Brown was arrested and handcuffed, but during the standoff with Gregory, he escaped.

Brown is described as being 6 feet tall and weighing 165 pounds. When he escaped, Brown was wearing a dark colored, patterned, hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and gym shoes. Brown frequents the Aetna and Glen Ryan neighborhoods as well as the Lake Shore Dunes Apartment complex in Gary.

Police say that Brown is likely armed and dangerous, so anyone spotting him should call police. Anyone with information on Brown’s whereabouts can call Lt. Jack Hamady at 219-742-7427, Sgt. William Fazekas 219-881-1210 or the Crime Tip Line at 866-274-6347.
