Now that the Blackhawks will have to wait until at least 2018 to try to win consecutive Stanley Cup championships (they’re locks for 2017, right?), fans can at least look forward to NHL awards season. Several Hawks have a chance to take home hardware once the dust settles on the postseason.
In addition to gauging their teammates’ thoughts on the seasons they’ve had, RedEye consulted the Magic 8-Ball to size up each player’s chances of winning the respective awards.
Corey Crawford for Vezina Trophy (league’s best goaltender)
The facts: Crawford is definitely in the mix after recording a league-best seven shutouts this regular season. He also was tied for fourth in save percentage (.924) and 19th in goals-against average (2.37). However, his upper-body injury toward the end of the season that sidelined him for nearly a month may have cost him too much.
In his own words: “It would be a pretty nice honor,” Crawford said earlier this season. “… It’s always about the next game first.”
Jonathan Toews: “Maybe he has been part of that talk, maybe he hasn’t, but he’s got my vote, absolutely. Crow should definitely be in that mix given the level he’s been playing at all year.”
Magic 8-Ball says: Outlook not so good
Artemi Panarin for Calder Trophy (league’s best rookie)
The facts: The Russian was the worst kind of threat to opponents this season, leading rookies in points (77) and even helping Patrick Kane become the first American-born player to win the scoring title.
In his own words: “I’m not thinking about it, but I’d be happy if I won the award. I’m doing my job, but not thinking about it.
Toews: “What else can you say about ‘Bread Man’? [He] stepped into the league, he’s been super comfortable since day one, and he’s only getting better and better every single day.”
Patrick Kane: “His [rookie season] is far and away better than mine. He’s come into this league and been an impact player right away and has a presence on the ice every time he’s out there.
“I was still kind of learning my way. You look at him, you can probably say he’s 50/50 on maybe [a shoot- or] pass-first type of mentality. Back then I was probably more of a setup man. He’s probably way more of a threat than I was first season in the league for sure.”

Magic 8-Ball says: Without a doubt
Patrick Kane for Art Ross Trophy (league’s leading scorer)
The facts: Put a bow on it, it’s a done deal. Kane scorched the NHL with 106 points (46 goals and 60 assists). He outpaced Dallas’ Jamie Benn by 17 points and had a 26-game points streak, the longest for an American-born player.
In his own words: “The point streak, you just kind of take it as it goes. Once you get up there around 15 games, I think I was really trying to get that American record, and once you hit 19 you realize that the franchise record is in reach as well, so that was another goal. It was a fun little streak for a while for sure.”
Magic 8-Ball says: It is certain. Duh.
Patrick Kane for Hart Trophy (league MVP)
The facts: This season, Kane also became the first American-born player in 20 years to reach 100 points. He helped the Hawks reach the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season and had 29 more points than his next closest teammate.
In his own words: “Definitely some games where I was on the fortunate end of things. I had some good breaks along the way. Pretty fun hockey while it was going on.”
Toews: “I think our team success is a huge reflection of what [Kane has] brought to our team this year.”
Magic 8-Ball: Signs point to yes.
