Think an old bottle cap or piece of plastic can’t be art? Think again.
Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade used those items and a selection of other old materials to create collages during a program held Thursday at the La Grange Public Library.
“We wanted kids to see you can create a work of art out of old things that are destined for the dump,” said Vicki Rakowksi, director of youth services.
About 20 kids attended and made collages depicting people or animals.
Joe D’Antonio, 7, of La Grange, made a figure of a person using cotton balls, bottle caps, cardboard and plastic,
“It’s important to use things you can recycle for something else because then it doesn’t have to go in a landfill, where it will just sit there,” he said. “If you recycle, you can make something new.”
Before tapping their artistic skills, the children listened to Cathy Berg, who works in youth services, read a book entitled “The Earth Book” by Todd Parr.
“It’s a great book because it helps kids understand how they can help the Earth,” Rakowski said.
The program and the book reinforced for children the idea that their actions, even just thinking about how an item could be reused rather than discarded, can help protect the environment.
“If we reuse things and are more careful about how we use things, we can save the Earth,” Rakowski said.
