A 60-year-old Calumet Park man was lying in between the tracks when he was struck by an Metra train early Wednesday in Blue Island, a Metra spokesman said.

The pedestrian was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after he was hit, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said. His condition was unavailable Thursday.

Train 251 hit the man at about 12:20 a.m. near the Burr Oak station in Blue Island, according to Metra officials.

The train was approaching the station when the engineer noticed a person lying between the tracks, Gillis said. The engineer quickly applied the brakes but was unable to stop the train in time.

The incident delayed the train for 80 minutes, according to Metra.
