A Hammond man was killed near the South Shore station Saturday afternoon, and the suspect in the shooting later shot himself when he was pulled over by Illinois State Police on Interstate 55 near Bloomington, Ill., police said.
Around 2:01 p.m. Saturday, Hammond police responded to a report of a shooting in the 4500 block of Hohman Avenue. Jaime Rodriguez, 34, was found on the ground near the parking lot of the Hammond South Shore station and transported to a Franciscan St. Margaret Hammond for treatment. He was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m. at the hospital, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.
The shooting happened on Hudson Street between Sheffield and Hohman avenues, Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said. Rodriguez lived in the 4500 block of Sheffield Avenue.
Police said the suspect, 35-year-old Salvador Corral of Hammond, was spotted fleeing the area on foot. Police determined that Corral was likely driving a gold Chevrolet Impala with Indiana license plates.
Police determined that Rodriguez and Corral were involved in a family argument just prior to Rodriguez being killed.
Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Illinois State Police spotted a car matching the description near Bloomington, Ill., on I-55. ISP troopers stopped the car, but Corral refused to exit his car and then fatally shot himself while still inside the car, according to the Associated Press.
Police said that no further suspects are being sought in the homicide.
