There are lots of things in this world that are too good to be true. This is not one of those things. PAWS Chicago, a local no-kill animal shelter, is waiving adoption fees for cats 2 years of age and older on Saturday and Sunday.
The adoption event, appropriately called Free for All, is inspired by the influx of kittens brought to shelters every year. Older cats are often overlooked in favor of their younger counterparts and sometimes wait longer to find their forever homes.

While we love cats of all ages (and dogs and rabbits and really anything with fur), adopting an older feline can come with benefits, according to PAWS. Their personalities are already established, meaning you know what you’re getting rather than waiting for a kitten to grow up and maybe be a total jerk. Albeit, a cute jerk.
Kittens typically require more maintenance than adult cats and need to be trained and adjusted to a human’s schedule. So while they may be adorable little balls of fluff, kittens might not be the best fit for every home.
This weekend’s waived adoption fees cover cats’ spay or neuter surgery, all age-appropriate shots and a microchip (as well as the guarantee that “PAWS will support you and your pet throughout their lifetime”).
