Pat Ledsham was an accountant who loved to bake.
So, 15 years ago, Ledsham decided to pursue her passion by enrolling in a culinary program at Joliet Junior College.
The effort paid off. She eventually was hired as a pastry chef at several eateries.

On May 7, Ledsham plans to continue her love of baking by opening, with her husband, Alan, Bakewell Bakery at 1050 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor.
“My passion for baking was inspired by the ability to create something unique and have someone tell you they really enjoyed what you created,” said Ledsham, who now lives Flossmoor. “It makes it all worth it when you see someone enjoying your food.”
Bakewell Bakery will use some recipes from her mother-in-law Rosemary Bernadette Ledsham. The eatery also will incorporate several of Pat Ledsham’s recipes.
The bakery will use eggs, flours and meats from area farms.
The bakery will provide pasties, bacon sandwiches, sweet tarts, Scottish eggs, English muffins, shortbreads, and hot cross buns.
The bakery, which will have a British flare, also will have a high tea at noon on Sundays. The business also will include a red telephone booth.
“We have a rich history behind our product and recipe that are truly unique,” Ledsham said. “Some of the recipes have been handed down for three generations. Every bite of our goods is packed with love, passion, quality and pride. And there is a vacancy of traditional British bakeries – especially in our area.”
Ledsham’s husband, Alan, originally from Liverpool, England, has more than 25 years of experience in the food industry. He was head purchaser of teas, coffee and wine for Marks and Spencer in London. He currently works with U.S. Foods in Illinois.
“When Alan moved to the U.S. from the U.K. he was not only home sick but was missing some of his favorite treats,” Ledsham said.
Ledsham said her adult daughter, Zoe, also contributes to her love of baking.
“Zoe loves to help me bake and it’s a wonderful experience baking together,” Ledsham said. “She is one of the reasons I decided to start up Bakewell Bakery.”
Ledsham’s has had her baked goods at the Homewood functions, including the farmers market, Chocolate Fest, Rail Fest and Garden Fest. She also said she has had her pastries at the Frankfort Farmers Market.
The bakery will be open 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
