State police are investigating why an Orland Park man was walking Monday afternoon on Interstate 80 before he was struck and killed by a semi.

Ralph Sharp, 58, was declared dead at the scene after Illinois State Police and emergency personnel responded at 3:40 p.m. near the interchange with Interstate 355 in New Lenox, police said.

Preliminary results of an autopsy show Sharp died of multiple injuries because of being struck by the truck, according to the Will County coroner’s office. A full report is pending.

Westbound Interstate 80 was down to one lane of traffic for two hours Monday afternoon while crews worked the scene, police said.

The driver of the truck, a New Lenox man, was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

No charges are expected at this time, police said.
