A 25-year-old Aurora man has pleaded guilty in connection to a September shooting that left his friend dead.
Adolfo Ramirez received six years in prison as part of his agreement with prosecutors in which he admitted to an amended charge of attempted armed violence. He could be released in a matter of months if he successfully completes an “impact incarceration” program. The Illinois Department of Corrections must first accept Ramirez into the program, commonly known as boot camp.
Ramirez pleaded guilty to being armed with a handgun while attempting to possess a small amount of cocaine Sept. 19. According to Aurora police, officers arrived at Ramirez’s Monomoy Street home to find 25-year-old Angel Reyna in the kitchen suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He died a short time later at an area hospital. Police reported seeing signs of drinking – empty beer bottles and a finished-off cognac bottle – and drug use in the kitchen, court documents state.
Ramirez maintained he didn’t know how the .22-caliber revolver went off, according to an Aurora detective’s search warrant affidavit. Police said from the outset they believed the shooting to be accidental. A drug possession charge initially filed against Ramirez after the incident was dropped by prosecutors.
Should Ramirez not qualify for boot camp, he will receive 195 days of jail credit toward his prison sentence for time he has served in the Kane County Jail since his arrest.
