Winners and losers from the second weekend of the NCAA tournament.
Winner/loser: Dillon Brooks
The Oregon forward heaved a 3-pointer with the shot clock running out and the Ducks up 11, then enthusiastically celebrated the bucket. After the game, cameras showed Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski admonishing Brooks in the handshake line. “(He said) I’m too good of a player to be showing off at the end,” Brooks said. “He’s right.” Brooks got that win and a valuable lesson — although he was way off his game Saturday night in a loss to Oklahoma.
Loser: Coach K
We’re OK with what you told Brooks after the game — assuming you’ve also instructed Grayson Allen to quit tripping people. We could all use some extra coaching in life, but don’t lie about it afterward because that made it look as if Brooks lied. And then to say you “reacted incorrectly” to the reporter’s question is a euphemism we could do without.
Winner: Ice water
It was coursing through the veins of the Villanova players who made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch against Kansas.
Winner/loser: Perry Ellis

It’s a team game, but Ellis was the No. 1 reason the Jayhawks beat Maryland (27 points on 10-for-17 shooting) and the No. 1 reason they lost to Villanova (four points on 1-for-5).
Loser: “Always Reppin'”
Not a great motto to begin with, but then Nike co-opted it as its slogan for March and forced it upon the teams it sponsors, dooming it to be yet another lame marketing gimmick.
Winners: Brothers-in-law
Jim and John Harbaugh displayed extraordinary family support for their sister’s husband, Indiana coach Tom Crean, by not only going to Friday’s game together, but also wearing matching crimson IU T-shirts. Adorable.
Loser: The Big Ten
Zero teams in the Elite Eight? Maybe Jim Harbaugh can cheer us up with a tweet.
Winner: Jim Boeheim

Not sure if we agree that disallowing coaches to call timeouts was a “horrific rule change,” but we appreciate the curmudgeonly opinions. (And, yes, we’d love to see all timeouts last only 30 seconds.)
Losers: TV viewers
Wonder how many people flipped to CBS on Sunday afternoon, saw women’s college hockey and wondered if they were hungover. The Sunday games should be played and televised during the day, as they were last year, not on a night already loaded with terrific TV (and the Blackhawks).

Loser: Cinderella
No season for fairy tales. Sorry, Syracuse is no Cinderella.
Loser: Fred Hoiberg
Iowa State’s loss to Virginia on Friday meant the frustrated Bulls coach didn’t get the chance to watch his former Cyclones play at the United Center on Sunday and try to take his mind off the mess that is his current team.
Winner: Facing the music
Time and again, losing players showed grace in how they answered questions after a 10-minute cooling-off period. It’s a reminder of how absurd Panthers coach Ron Rivera was to opine that players who lose the Super Bowl shouldn’t have to talk after the game.
Winner: Buddy Hield

And here we thought college basketball lacked stars. Hield is a sight to behold.
Winners: History buffs
Verne Lundquist threw in this aside at the end of the Duke-Oregon broadcast: “I just noticed one of the T-shirts says, ‘Mighty Oregon.’ That’s kind of an oblique reference to the 1939 team that was known as ‘the Mighty Firs.’ ” Actually, they were nicknamed the “Tall Firs,” but let’s not that get in the way of a good story. Tell us another one, Uncle Verne, and don’t spare the vocabulary words like “oblique.”
Loser: Grayson Allen
Probably even more tantalizing to Duke haters than the Blue Devils’ exit from the tournament was the sight of Allen tripping on Elgin Cook’s foot, which sent the Duke guard sprawling to the court. Was it a bit of cosmic justice after cameras caught at least three occasions this season in which Allen appeared to trip an opposing player? The irony seemed to tickle Lundquist. “Well, that’s interesting, isn’t it?” he asked. “A trip on Grayson Allen. He was the recipient, yes.”
Winner: Jake Layman
The Maryland big man showed no quit against Kansas on one standout play with five minutes left. Kansas’ Landen Lucas blocked Melo Trimble’s jumper, and the Jayhawks looked to put on a little showtime on the fast break with Wayne Selden Jr.’s behind-the-back dish to Perry Ellis. But Layman trailed the play and forcefully stuffed Ellis’ dunk attempt.
Winner: Notre Dame
A great run.
Loser: Hustle
Kansas’ Devonte’ Graham picked up his fifth foul for the crime of diving for a loose ball.
Losers: TBS and Rob Lowe
What was with showing Lowe’s tweet about his love for Duke twice, followed by a shot of Lowe and the rest of the cast of “St. Elmo’s Fire”? The fact the movie came out in 1985, long before any of the players were born, should tell you something.
