Laura Fransen, 47, of Oak Park answered a few questions for Pioneer Press Jan. 31 while at the Paul Hruby Ice Arena at the Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex.

Q: What brings you here today?

A: My kids are playing. I’ve got one of each: Squirt and Polar Bear Hockey League. And a husband who coaches. It’s fun, a lot of fun.

Q: Hidden gem of Oak Park or River Forest?

A: Eastgate Café.

Q: Typical order there?

A: A latte.

Q: Last book you read?

A: “The Martian.” I loved it. It was hilarious. A lot of insights. Really clever.

Q: Words you live by?

A: Family first.

Q: Favorite travel destination?

A: Paris. I don’t think you can go there at any time of day or time of year and you’re not in awe of how beautiful it is. It’s just stunning.

Q: Best dish at a local restaurant?

A: The Moroccan wings at Autre Monde. They’re fried chicken wings with a spicy honey sauce.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?

A: A mom. I have two boys: Jack, 9, and Max, 7.

Q: Biggest parenting revelation?

A: You can’t do it alone. You really do need a village. We’ve got an amazing group of families on our block who support and guide us. We live on the best block.
