Hampshire police Chief Brian Thompson commended Officer Ryan Huber during the Village Board meeting this week for his proper handling of a high-risk call that occurred last month at the Travel Centers of America along Route 20 in Hampshire.
According to Thompson, a 45-year-old man was reported waving a handgun and making threats to people at the truck stop. He had gone into hiding when Huber arrived, but Huber was able to find him.

Huber asked the man to drop his weapon, and instead of obeying the officer, the man pointed his handgun at Huber and told Huber to shoot him, Thompson said. Huber took cover.
He was able to get the man under control and obtain the weapon, Thompson said. The handgun turned out to be an imitation.
“Officer Huber displayed the knowledge of what to do that all officers should have during this kind of situation,” Thompson said.
Huber’s wife, Ashley, and their son, Jackson, 1, attended the Village Board meeting, where Huber received a standing ovation from the board and the audience.
