An 18-year-old Chicago man has been charged in connection with an attempted break-in that occurred early Thursday morning at a residence on the 1500 block of Kirk Street in Evanston, police said Tuesday.

Stephen W. Kee, of the 2800 block of West 82nd Street in Chicago, was arrested at Kirk Street and Florence Avenue at 2 a.m. last Thursday and charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle.

The homeowners, who were asleep at the time of the incident, reported being awakened by a “loud crash on their first floor,” police said Thursday. The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m., police said. The residents called 911 and police discovered a broken window in the backdoor, and a car belonging to one of the residents and parked near the home was found to have been ransacked.

A second man police said they arrested in connection with the incident on Thursday has since been released, Perry Polinski, the department’s communication coordinator, wrote in an email.

Police said a vehicle recovered in connection with the incident was apparently stolen from Chicago.

Polinski said additional charges against either Kee or the man who was released from custody may be forthcoming pending further processing of physical evidence.

Kee is due in court on April 19.
