Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

While knowing self-defense techniques can help if you find yourself in a dangerous situation, there are ways you can be proactive about your safety. Here are some tips from the Chicago Police Department to keep yourself safe during your nightly (or early-morning) run:

Choose a trail you’re comfortable with, and if you’re trying a new one, bring a friend.

Listen to music in only one ear, if at all, to make sure you’re alert. “Having your music blasting in both ears is the best way to have someone sneak up on you,” said Sue Garstki, owner of Krav Maga Illinois.

Take note of your surroundings and note any landmarks, such as bridges or rivers.

Don’t bring any bags or valuables (other than your phone or iPod, if necessary).

If somebody does run near you, be sure to make eye contact and take note of their clothing and what they look like, such as hair and eye color and defining marks.

Tell somebody where you’ll be and when you’ll be done with your run so they know when to start worrying.

Last, but not least, trust your instincts.
