Officials confirmed Friday the bus was carrying 35 students at 3:26 p.m. at the intersection of Birch Road and Center Avenue when the crash happened.
According to police, the bus was southbound on Center and turning east onto Birch when it struck a vehicle that was stopped and facing westbound on Birch.
“During the left turn, there was contact between the bus and car,” said Jodi Bryant, a spokeswoman for Homewood-Flossmoor High School District 233.
The bus driver was cited for improper lane use, police said. The driver is not an employee of the district, Bryant said. Homewood-Flossmoor contracts with the Chicago Heights-based Kickert School Bus Company.
Four children between the ages of 14 and 19 complained of pain or injuries, Bryant said. Two were released to their parents and two were taken to South Suburban Hospital for treatment, she said.
School staff notified all parents of the children who were on the bus, which was making its usual after-school run when it crashed, Bryant said.
