Snow fell throughout the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon, with heavier snow moving east of Chicago into northwest Indiana midafternoon, as gusty winds and some icy roads made for hazardous driving.

The heaviest snowfall came north of the city, with 5.3 inches falling in Beach Park in Lake County, since snow began Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. Snowfall totals in most areas of the city and to the south were around an inch or below.

Although much of the snowstorm has moved east, “light snow and blowing of fallen snow from gusty (northwest) winds will create reduced visibility at times through the evening commute,” according to the weather service.

Tuesday morning, driving conditions were slow and slippery from ice and, to the north, windblown snow. State police reported several minor accidents but no serious injuries.

Green Line trains experienced delays after track conditions from Cermak south to 63rd briefly stopped trains around 5:55 a.m. No major Metra delays were reported.

More than 600 flights were canceled at Chicago’s airports, around 570 at O’Hare and about 70 at Midway, according to the city’s Department of Aviation. At O’Hare, a private jet slid off a runway and an American Airlines pilot asked to have a plane towed because of slippery conditions.

The cold front arrived late Monday afternoon, dropping temperatures at O’Hare from 50 degrees at 4 p.m. to 35 degrees at 5 p.m., according to the weather service.

Another round of snow is expected to hit the Chicago area Wednesday evening, with snowfall totals Wednesday night through Thursday morning of 1 to 4 inches, with more accumulation in the south suburbs. Another snowstorm may hit, especially north of Interstate 80, Friday night into Saturday, but totals again are expected to be only a few inches.

Temperatures over the next few days will hover in the low 30s during the day and the mid-20s at night. A warmup is set to begin on the weekend, as highs reach into the mid-40s on Saturday and coming close to 50 on Sunday.
