Queen of Peace High School will have a high profile visitor at mass Friday — Archbishop Blase Cupich.

Cupich will join the students at 1 p.m. at the school to help celebrate St. Dominic and 800 years of the Dominican tradition, at an event, titled “The Light of Truth.”

The high school, located at 7659 Linder Avenue in Burbank, was contacted by the Archdiocese of Chicago to see if it would like to share the special day with Cupich, officials said.

Both Queen of Peace staff and students were responsible for organizing the event and preparing for the scheduled mass.

The entire school actively looks forward to Cupich’s visit, according to Queen of Peace President Anne O’Malley.

“This is a very special Mass at Queen of Peace,” O’Malley said. “We are honored that the Archbishop will be here to lead us in prayer as we celebrate St. Dominic and our Dominican heritage. This will be a great day for the Queen of Peace community.”

This will be Cupich’s first mass at the school and he will be aided by the Rev. William Vanecko, of St. Columbanus Parish in Chicago..

“We are delighted that the Archbishop will be joining us for mass here at Queen of Peace,” said Amy Lapinski, director of communication at Queen of Peace. “Our students have worked hard to prepare for his visit and show him all the best of Queen of Peace in word and song. We are excited to spend time together in prayer as we honor our Dominican values and traditions.”

The school is anticipating several hundred people to attend the program, including students, parents and guests.

“This Mass is a celebration of St. Dominic and 800 years of the Dominican tradition,” Lapinski said. “We are a Dominican school and just as St. Dominic heard the call to spread the word of the Lord by preaching and teaching we at Queen of Peace instill the Dominican values in our students and call on them to carry the Dominican values and traditions into the world.”

On Jan. 23, Cupich visited Queen of Peace for a basketball game against between the school and Mother McAuley. . McAuley ended up winning 60-54.
