A Montgomery man has received 10 years in prison after admitting he fired a gun near Krug Elementary School in Aurora in 2015, court records show.
During a recent hearing, 19-year-old Kenneth Newsome pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school as part of an agreement with Kane County prosecutors who said he fired a .45-caliber handgun at a man near the school on the city’s East Side.
Newsome was initially charged with attempted murder and multiple other offenses after the Feb. 6, 2015, incident during which authorities said he shot a man twice in the leg and fired the gun twice toward two other men as part of a fight. After the shooting, Newsome and a second man, Edwardo Hernandez, fled to the home Hernandez rented on Homer Avenue in Aurora. The pair surrendered to police several hours later without incident.

Hernandez, 21, pleaded guilty to mob action in July and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He remains held in Pinckneyville Correctional Center on that conviction, as well as a Will County burglary case for which he was on parole at the time of the shooting.
Newsome is currently being processed at Stateville Correctional Center. He received credit toward his sentence for 376 days spent in Kane County Jail.
