The roof of the College of DuPage’s Seaton Computing Center in Glen Ellyn was seriously damaged by Friday’s high winds, college officials said.
Wind gusts tore free a 30-by-60 piece of roofing about 1 p.m., said Joe Moore, vice president of marketing and communications. The piece of roofing remained atop the building and was not blown down to the ground, where it could have caused some additional damage, he said.
The area was cordoned off to prevent any injuries from the debris being shifted by the continued winds.
“The roofing contractors are on-site now, and repairs should be completed within the next couple of days,” Moore said. “I climbed up there, and it looks like the wind just got up under the roofing material and peeled it off.”
It’s not known how much damage the roof sustained or how much the repairs may cost.
“We’re surveying everything now, and we should know more later,” Moore said.
No other wind-related damages had been reported on the college campus. However, Moore said, with the high winds it is possible some other buildings may have sustained superficial damage.
The Chicago area was under a high-wind warning most of the day, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour and wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
