
Waukegan
Competition: The Waukegan High School JROTC Drill Team earned its first team victory of the season at the Purdue Army ROTC Drill Meet, while senior Cristian Reyes took first place for an individual performance in the Solo Armed Exhibition. The team win came in the Varsity Unarmed Exhibition Platoon, in which the Bulldog Drill Team beat out 22 other schools. Senior Eunylda Marin commands the varsity team. The WHS Drill team also won first place in the Junior Varsity Unarmed Exhibition, commanded by senior Gabriela Garcia.
Antioch
Screening: Emmons School District 33 will conduct a free preschool screening for children ages 3, 4 and 5 who live in the district from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 25 at 24226 W. Beach Grove Road. Spelling champs: Copeland Manor, Adler Park and Highland Middle school students competed in the National Geographic Bee, with each school naming a winner. For Adler Park, the champion is Zach Henderson. For Copeland Manor, the champion is Braden Andersen. For Highland Middle School, the champion is Calvin Blohm. The school champions advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. The school champions will be eligible to win the national championship and its top prize, a $25,000 college scholarship.
Mundelein
Registration: Kindergarten registration for fall 2016 in Mundelein School District 75 will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at Washington School, 122 S. Garfield Ave. Bring a copy of a current lease or mortgage, two current utility bills, and the child’s birth certificate. The fee for registration is $86.50 which can be paid by cash or check. Appointment: The Grayslake Community High School District 127 Board of Education appointed Thomas Halloran to the board to fill a seat vacated by Suzanne Swanson’s recent resignation. Halloran previously served on the board from 2009-13. Halloran is employed by the Northwestern University Information Technology Department and has 28 years of service supporting academic research computing, student learning technologies and administrative computing. He has served as the director of football for the Grayslake Colts Youth Football Program.
Lincolnshire
Competition: The Science Bowl Team from Daniel Wright Junior High School recently competed with eight other middle school teams and captured the championship at the 2016 Regional Science Bowl Competition at Argonne National Laboratory. The team was comprised of Anmol Dash (grade 6), Healey Kogan (grade 8), Ellen Ma (grade 8), George Paoletti (grade 8), and Praneet Rathi (grade 7). This is the third consecutive year the school’s Science Bowl Team took the regional crown at Argonne Lab to advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. This is the fifth time in six years a team from Daniel Wright will be part of the National Science Bowl competition April 28 through May 2.
Vernon Hills
Donations: Students from Hawthorn Townline Elementary School and Hawthorn School of Dual Language pledged over $13,000 for the American Heart Association in a jump rope for heart fundraiser. Once checks and cash are counted, that amount is expected to grow. Jump Rope For Heart is a national fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The events engage students with jumping rope while empowering them to improve their own health and help other students with heart-health issues.
Donations: Kindergarten students from Hawthorn Elementary South School recently brightened the day of residents in assisted living at Brookdale in Vernon Hills by handing out homemade Valentine’s Day cards. The students have been doing random acts of kindness for others such as washing dishes, holding open a door, writing letters to sick children, and donating pet supplies to a shelter. The acts are part of a larger school theme of building a school around happiness.
