New Trier’s Randy Oberembt recently was selected as the Illinois Athletic Directors Association’s Class 3A/4A athletic director of the year. He will be honored at the organization’s statewide banquet on Saturday, April 30, at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria.
Oberembt deflected attention away from himself and called the award the result of a collaborative effort among students, coaches and administrators at New Trier, District 203 and the Central Suburban League.
His fellow conference colleagues were quick to compliment Oberembt.
“Randy is not only one of the finest ADs I have ever worked with, but one of the finest men I have ever worked with,” Glenbrook South athletic director Steve Rockrohr said. “His contributions in high school athletics to the students not only of New Trier, but the entire state of Illinois are exemplary. This award is testament to that.”
Glenbrook North athletic director John Catalano said the IADA “got it right by honoring Randy.”
“He is the consummate professional who has been a great mentor to many of us in the CSL,” Catalano said. “He has led both New Trier and the CSL using wisdom and perception as tools to solve everyday problems and issues that surround interscholastic athletics throughout our area. He’s done it with class and grace, always putting the concern of the student-athlete first.”
The Trevians’ athletic director since 2007-08, Oberembt is retiring at the end of the school year. He will be replaced by Augie Fontanetta.
During Oberembt’s tenure at New Trier, athletic participation has grown and the Trevians added bass fishing, cheerleading and rowing, according to a District 203 press release. In conjunction with the New Trier Booster Club, Oberembt led the charge to bring artificial turf fields to New Trier’s Northfield Campus.
In 2015, the Illinois High School Association honored Oberembt with a Distinguished Service Award.
