AOL Mail users were locked out of the service for at least five hours Monday — prompting holdouts to threaten to switch to Gmail.
Users of the service received an error message: “There was a problem handling your request. An unspecified error has occurred.” According to DownDetector.com, which tracks website outages, users began reporting the service was down at about 9 a.m., with reports diminishing after 3 p.m.
The company said the problem had been resolved just before 4 p.m. “We’re happy to announce the issue with AOL Mail is resolved,” AOL Mail tweeted. “We appreciate your patience and will continue to update you here in the future.”
AOL Mail first tweeted about the outage at 10:15 a.m., saying “You may not be able to access AOL Mail. Our top priority right now is getting this fixed. We appreciate your patience during this time.”
According to the company’s AOL Mail Twitter account, the service experienced a several-hour outage Jan. 26.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
