Lake Forest
Donations: Students from Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and younger girls from several Lake County communities made 30 blankets during a community service day project in December at the all-girls college prep high school in Lake Forest. These blankets are now providing some extra warmth for residents of the Staben House in Waukegan and the Lake County Haven in Libertyville. Both shelters provide transitional housing and a variety of services to help homeless women with children achieve and sustain permanent, independent housing. Sixteen of the soft, warm and comforting blankets were delivered to Staben House recently to meet a need there. The rest were taken to Lake County Haven Jan. 29. This marked the start of a planned annual community service event in which younger girls will be invited to Woodlands Academy to join its students in projects that benefit local community service organizations. Joining Woodlands students in this year’s blanket-making project were girls from the following schools: Daniel Wright Junior High School, Lincolnshire; East Lake Academy, Lake Forest; Holy Cross School, Deerfield; Miguel Juarez Middle School, Waukegan; Our Lady of Humility, Beach Park; and School of St. Mary, Lake Forest Also participating were girls from two nearby parishes, Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest and Holy Cross Catholic Church in Deerfield, as well as Girl Scouts representing Lake Forest, Beach Park and Zion.
Waukegan
Survey: Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 is again joining the Illinois State Board of Education in providing a unique opportunity for teachers, students and parents across the state to have a voice in improving their schools through the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. It can be found at survey.5-essentials.org/illinois. From now through March 11, teachers, students and parents are asked to take a 20-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. This survey will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the 2015 statewide implementation. Students in grades 6 to 12 in District 60 will be taking the survey during class time over the next several weeks. Parents are asked to please find time to take the short survey before March 11 The data generated by the Illinois 5Essentials help schools target resources and make decisions that help to accelerate learning and test score gains.. Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in May 2016. Survey results will also be reported publicly on the 2016 State School Report Card website, illinoisreportcard.com and the full 5Essentials Reports will also be released in the fall.
