I broke my fast-food cardinal rule (no Taco Bell while the sun is still out) this afternoon to try the chain’s new “mystery” item, which will be revealed in a Super Bowl commercial tomorrow and added to the regular menu Monday. Like me, those who couldn’t possibly wait an additional 48 hours were offered the chance to pre-order the mystery item and pick it up between 2-4 p.m. today.

Because we live in a world where Taco Bell and the latest Apple product are pretty much equals.

Spoiler alert: The new menu item is a Quesalupa, all the usual taco fixings—beef (chicken and steak are also available), tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, cheddar—swaddled in a tender, cheese-stuffed quesadilla.

It’s pretty good … even at 2 p.m., which is saying a lot. Though the quesadilla is a bit chewier than your average chalupa shell (thanks, cheese), it’s still toasted to flaky perfection. And as a single menu item priced at $2.99, it’s one of your best bets for filling up fast and soaking up copious amounts of alcohol after a night out.

Will I order it again? Eh, I’d probably rather have a Chalupa Supreme. But was it worth trying once? Absolutely. Also noteworthy: The people-watching at Wicker Park’s Taco Bell Cantina around 2 p.m. on a Saturday is truly remarkable.
