When Kenneth Li’s college plans changed in the last month, the Hinsdale Central senior golfer found another home in the Ivy League.
Li, a Westmont resident, verbally committed to Brown last week. His first choice, Harvard, told him that it did not have a spot available on next year’s golf team.
Hinsdale Central won its fourth consecutive Class 3A state championship in the fall. Li is the third Division I recruit from the team, along with senior Drew Shepherd (Kansas) and junior Brendan O’Reilly (Illinois).
“(Brown coach Michael Hughes) gave me a call and said he would like to have me there,” Li said. “Getting this opportunity after Harvard fell through is something that I have really appreciated.”
Li pledged to Brown after visiting the campus in Providence, R. I.
“It’s definitely a great school,” said Li, who plans to study economics. “I have some friends from Central that will go there as well.”
Li is a four-year member of the Red Devils varsity and was individual state champion as a junior when he beat Maine East’s Orion Yamat by five strokes in 2014. Li finished 14th as a freshman, was the state runner-up in 2013 and tied for 19th in the fall. He is Hinsdale Central’s second three-time state medalist; Brett Tomfordhe placed at state from 2006-08.
