At least five people were taken to nearby hospitals Wednesday night after a two-car crash in Long Grove.

The accident took place at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Old Route 53, according to a report from Marc Small, deputy chief of the Long Grove Fire Protection District. A Toyota Camry was moving east on Lake Cook and attempted a left turn onto Old Route 53 when a Ford Expedition slammed into it, Lake County sheriff’s Detective Christopher Covelli said. The Camry sustained heavy front-end damage, trapping the driver inside with life-threatening injuries, Small said in his report.

An off-duty Long Grove firefighter arrived moments after the crash and tried to rescue the Camry’s driver, but the firefighter could not get the door open, Small said. Emergency crews began arriving at 9:14 p.m., he said, and they were able to open the car at 9:20 p.m. An ambulance transported the driver, the only occupant, to Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge.

Six people were in the SUV, Small’s report said. Ambulances transported four to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, reportedly with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. Small said the SUV sustained moderate front-end damage.

Covelli said deputies have not issued any tickets, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
