A Barrington man who authorities say shot his wife following an argument over a coffee maker was indicted on first-degree murder charges Wednesday.

Larry Lotz, 65, was arrested Jan. 15 after officials found his wife, Karen Lotz, fatally shot in their home. Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Corbin said at a bond hearing that Larry Lotz shot his wife following an argument about his having left a coffee maker on in the kitchen.

Authorities said Larry Lotz shot at his wife four times, striking her three times, including once in the head. She died later at a local hospital.

Larry Lotz told police where to find the handgun he allegedly used, which was recovered from the scene, Corbin said. He later gave a videotaped statement in which he admitted shooting his wife, the prosecutor said.

Karen Lotz, 59, had worked at Harper College in Palatine since 1996, most recently as admissions processing supervisor, according to a spokeswoman for the school.

Larry Lotz is a Vietnam War-era Army veteran who worked in information technology for various employers before retiring, his son told reporters after the shooting. He has been in Lake County Jail on $3 million bail since his arrest.

On Wednesday, Larry Lotz was also given a Feb. 11 arraignment date.
