The Village of Homewood took the spirit of summertime farmers markets and brought it indoors for the winter.

On Saturday, the village opened the doors to its second annual winter indoor farmers market. The market will continue through the last Saturday in April from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Marie Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave.

“This is my first time here as a vendor, but growing up in Homewood, it is great to see everyone — from people I attended high school with, to their parents and more,” said Amy Waligora of Steger. “I feel like I know more than half the people here today. Homewood is such a tight-knit community and I love events like this that benefit the community.”

Laurie, Norris, toffee vendor, agreed.

“I love Homewood,” she said. “I entered and won the Chocolate Fest bake-off competition and came in first place in 2013. The events in Homewood are so family friendly and offer something for everyone.”

Norris was showcasing six different kinds of toffee, including a new addition this year, gluten-free toffee.

“Gluten-free items are becoming more and more popular and I wanted to be able to have that option in my toffee as well,” she said.

With over 30 years of continuous operation, the seasonal outdoor Homewood farmers market is one of the oldest and most established markets around Chicago, according to Kate Duff, Homewood’s farmers market manager.

“The farmers market is really an integral part of the community,” Duff said. “We have participation from local musicians, community groups and vendors. People come to the market not just to shop but also to connect with their friends and neighbors. It’s a fun, lively and welcoming atmosphere. Now with the winter market, the village can continue to serve market customers throughout the year.”

The winter market features between 15 and 20 vendors at each market offering a wide variety of goods, including empanadas, soup, gumbo, cheesecake, veggie burgers, homemade granola bars, kettle corn, olive oils, pasta sauces, cheeses, pies, bread, chocolate, hydroponics, microgreens, plants, organic body products and crafts including homemade jewelry, paintings, home decor and antique items.

For the early gardeners, vendors offering bedding plants, flowers, seeds, and more for the start of gardening season.

Vendors from the Homewood Hunt & Gather Markets will sell handcrafted items and collectibles. In addition, different community organizations will attend the indoor farmers market to provide information on their group and activities happening in the community.
