A standoff Sunday night at a home on a busy Hammond street ended with a suicide.

The Hammond Police Department received a call about a possible suicidal man around 8 p.m. to the 7800 block of Northcote Avenue, Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda said in a press release Monday. Hoyda said a sergeant first on the scene said he saw a man with a handgun inside the house.

Officers made unsuccessful attempts to talk to the 25-year-old man before calling the department’s SWAT team two hours later, according to Hoyda. SWAT members found the man in his bedroom, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers retrieved a 9 mm handgun from the scene, Hoyda said in the release.

Traffic was rerouted around the incident for three hours while officers tried to make contact with the man. Family members of his were on the scene late Sunday night, shaken but unharmed.
