A Waukegan man has been charged with drug and weapons violations after a drug-sniffing dog helped officers find more than 10 grams of heroin, crack cocaine and cocaine during a traffic stop this week in Beach Park, police said.
A deputy on routine patrol stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at about 5 p.m. Tuesday for a traffic violation near North Sheridan Road and West Paddock Avenue, the Lake County sheriff’s office announced Thursday.
The deputy reported the smell of burnt marijuana and requested the assistance of Diesel, a drug-sniffing dog in the sheriff’s office. The canine helped deputies find 29 individually packaged bags of heroin, three individually packaged bags of crack cocaine, and a bag of cocaine inside the vehicle, police said.
The deputies also found a loaded .40-caliber handgun with a defaced serial number, police said.
