New Trier junior Jake Lowell said he thought his toughest match at the Central Suburban League’s wrestling tournament would be in the semifinals against Maine West’s Jake Riportella.

But Lowell, who pinned Riportella at the 3:26 mark on Saturday, Jan. 23, found out that wasn’t the case.

Lowell (31-4) needed a takedown in overtime to earn a 3-1 win over Evanston senior Jaalen Banner in the 182-pound final in Deerfield. Lowell’s other two wins were by fall and major decision.

“Too close,” Lowell said. “I fell asleep after the semifinal match, and I woke up disoriented. I didn’t bring enough energy to the match. He didn’t take me down, but props to him.”

New Trier finished first in three weight classes, with senior Jack Alcantara (31-12) winning at 152 and senior Joe Modica (33-11) victorious at 195. Four Trevians took second place.

Deerfield, which had four individual champions, won the team title with 255 points. The Trevians followed in second with 214.5, and Evanston was third with 187.

Lowell and the Trevians start the postseason on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Class 3A Glenbrook South Individual Regional.

This story has been revised to reflect the following correction:

The article misstated how many individual champions Deerfield had at the conference wrestling tournament. It was four, not three.
