Metea Valley High School’s theater department tackles some gritty topics within the confines of an energetic pop-rock musical score when “Next to Normal” opens Wednesday in the school’s black box theater.

“We chose ‘Next to Normal’ because it deals with themes that our students and community face every day: pressures of suburban life, family dynamics, even mature themes like substance abuse and mental illness,” said Nathan Bramstedt, a Metea Valley teacher and the show’s director.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning drama and Tony Award winner, “Next to Normal” delves into the story of Diana, a suburban mom struggling with bipolar disorder and how it impacts her family. And while this isn’t a typical musical with “big production numbers and bright costumes,” Bramstedt said, the cast delivers big, taking the audience on a poignant journey.

“Our cast is very strong, and their talents (are) complemented and challenged by this show,” Bramstedt said. “It’s been a growing experience for all involved; the students are taking dramatic risks and are performing with true intentions, which is impressive.”

Seniors Caroline Bourg and Bailey Cochran each play the role of Natalie, Diana’s teenage daughter, in alternating evening performances.

“The things I’ve enjoyed most about playing the role of Natalie are the amazing songs and sassy lines,” said Cochran, 17. “The part was so well-written, and I’ve had a lot of fun conjuring my inner angsty teen.”

Bourg, 17, shared the sentiment.

“I have enjoyed getting to play Natalie (because she) is someone from my generation, my age, yet (she’s) so different from me,” Bourg said. “Normally I play characters that are from a completely different era or universe, but this character is so raw and real. There’s really no theatrics since she’s going through something that unfortunately many kids do.”

Bramstedt said “Next to Normal” examines some heavy topics and will leave audience members with something to think about.

“No family is perfect, but every family can be unified by support and love,” Bramstedt said. “These are important lessons for our young people to learn, and we hope to spark conversations within our families, opening dialogue between students and parents.”

“Next to Normal” has mature themes and includes mature language, and it is not recommended for children. Following each performance, the cast, creative team and a mental health professional will offer a talkback to further explore the themes of the show.
