Farmers markets typically are seasonal, but there’s one springing up early in Homewood.
The village will host its annual winter indoor farmers market from 9 a.m. to noon the last Saturday of the month from January through April at the Marie Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave.
“The indoor farmers market is a great way for people to reconnect during the winter months,” said Allisa Opyd, community events manager for the village. “Homewood residents have always had a strong support for our local musicians, organizations and artisans. The indoor market provides a wonderful opportunity for market patrons to shop some of their favorite vendors and reconnect with friends.”
The indoor farmers market began last year after a very successful outdoor farmers market, according to Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld.
“Why not continue the momentum with an indoor market?” he said.

With more than 30 years of continuous operation, the outdoor Homewood farmers market is one of the oldest and most established markets in the area, according to Homewood farmers market manager Kate Duff. “And now with the winter market, we can serve market customers throughout the year,” she said.
“Our opening market last year was so busy we immediately had to look for a new venue for the rest of the season,” Duff said. “This year we’re moving to an even larger space to accommodate more vendors and more customers.”
The market will feature 15 to 20 vendors each month with a wide variety of goods, including empanadas, soup, gumbo, cheesecake, veggie burgers, homemade granola bars, kettle corn, olive oils, pasta sauces, cheeses, pies, bread, chocolate, hydroponics, plants, organic body products, and crafts such as homemade jewelry, paintings, home decor and antique items.
For the early gardeners, vendors will be offering bedding plants, flowers, seeds and more for the start of gardening season.
Hunt & Gather vendors will sell handcrafted items and collectibles. In addition, different community organizations will be on hand to provide information on their groups and community activities.
“The farmers market is really an integral part of the community,” Duff said. “It’s a fun, lively and welcoming atmosphere.”
