Charges are forthcoming Friday against two young men after an armed robbery in Schererville Thursday night that resulted in a car crash in Highland and multi-agency manhunt.

The robbery took place at the AT&T store at 1150 U.S. Highway 41, Schererville Police Commander Brian Neyhart said Friday. Three men, including a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old, came into the store, and two pulled out handguns, according to Neyhart.

The men forced store employees into the back room, where they made them load up an undetermined number of cell phones, Neyhart said. They also took cash from the register before leaving and heading northbound on U.S. 41 toward Highland.

A Schererville Police officer saw the men driving past Whole Foods and tried to pull out behind them, Neyhart said. The men sped up and crashed their vehicle at the corner of U.S. 41 and Ramblewood Drive, after which they ran from the wreckage, he said.

A Highland Police officer and off-duty Schererville officer apprehended the 19-year-old in the Meijer gas station, while the 16- year-old was found in the neighborhood behind the store. Two other men, meanwhile, are still at-large, Neyhart said.

Neyhart said the department is seeking to charge the 16-year-old as an adult. He and the 19-year-old are currently being held at the Lake County Jail.

The Highland, Griffith, Munster and Lake County Police Departments assisted Schererville in the pursuit.
