“She kept a black box here full of index cards for every book she read,” he says, referring to his wife, a teacher, who died of metastatic breast cancer in November 2015.
“They’re notes on how she acquired the books, and when, and what they meant to her. Pam wrote a lot because, even before she got sick, she was always really afraid of losing her memory.”
Honn, a writer, librarian and bird-watcher, has his own modes of remembrance — writing “A Slow Archive,” a poetry chapbook about grief; rereading some of his and Pam’s favorite books (their tastes overlapped at Russian lit); cataloging birds….
Sometimes memories fall into his lap — like a note from Pam out of his copy of C.L.R. James’ “The Black Jacobins, one of his favorite books: “Josh! Have a great first day at the job and school! Heart heart heart, Pam.”
