Aurora police said a 16-year-old was caught driving a stolen vehicle at 3 a.m. Friday and fled from police after he was spotted.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, the teen was charged with two counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, as well as resisting arrest, following the incident that began in the area of Benton Street and Stolp Avenue.

An Aurora officer working an unrelated call in the area was outside of his squad car when he noticed the teenager drive by, Ferrelli said. Since the driver appeared to be young, and it was after curfew, the officer got back into his squad car and followed the vehicle.

When he did so, the teen sped off northbound on Stolp Avenue, Ferrelli said. Because of the speed of the teen’s vehicle, the officer decided not to conduct a traffic stop, but continued on in the vehicle’s direction.

The teen driver was next spotted going through a red light at Galena Boulevard and heading toward the dead end of Stolp Avenue, police said.

Ferrelli said the teen then got out of the car and began to run. The officer ran after the teen, who was eventually located. He was taken into custody in the first block of North Stolp Avenue and sent to a youth home.

According to Ferrelli, the vehicle the teen was driving had been reported stolen around 2:30 a.m. Jan. 7 from a driveway in the 1100 block of Howell Place. Ferrelli said the vehicle was left running and unattended when it was taken.
