A 51-year-old woman was killed while crossing a street in Gary Friday night, according to police.

Authorities were called to the incident at about 6:30 p.m. near 20th Avenue and Grant Street, according to a press release from Gary Police spokeswoman Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

The woman was identified as Lorraine Love, of the 2000 block of Grant Street in Gary, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

Witnesses at the scene said Love was heading home from a local fast food restaurant on the corner of 20th Avenue and Grant Street, when she was hit by a car while crossing the street. A man at the scene who said he was the woman’s boyfriend, but declined to be identified, said he was waiting for her to return home, but did not see or hear the crash.
