An early-morning attic fire Friday left a home in Naperville’s historic district uninhabitable, but no one was injured, authorities said.
Dispatchers received a call about 1:15 a.m. from the owner of a home in the 100 block of North Loomis Street, reporting flames were coming from the structure’s roof, Bureau Chief George Hyland reported in a news release.
A dozen pieces of fire equipment and 26 responders were sent to the location. Arriving four minutes after the call came in, the first on the scene could see no smoke coming from the house, but realized the fire was located in the attic, Hyland said.
“Access was gained to this tight space with difficulty, but once companies were able to advance a hose line into this area, the fire was quickly extinguished,” Hyland said, noting that the flames were out by 2 a.m. “The family safely exited the structure and neighbors took the children in during the course of firefighting.”
Investigators continued to look into the cause of the fire Friday morning, but an inspector from the Transportation, Engineering and Development department determined that the residence could not be safely occupied.
Companies from the Downers Grove and Wheaton fire departments and the Lockport and Plainfield fire protection districts provided station coverage for the Naperville agency during the response, Hyland said.
