Confronted by police outside a Dean Street apartment after a 911 call about a stabbing, Heather Baltes dropped a pair of scissors and offered an “unsolicited statement” about what had just occurred.

“I hope the (expletive) dies,” Baltes said, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by a South Elgin police investigator.

Baltes, 23, is charged with attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the Dec. 27 stabbing of a 54-year-old man described in court documents as her mother’s boyfriend. The affidavit states Baltes and the man argued over his refusal to give her money for her to move out of state. Baltes then went into the kitchen and grabbed a pair of scissors before stabbing the man 12 times in the head, neck and back, the affidavit states, while also noting the man suffered severe injuries, but was able to talk with police.

Police sought a search warrant to collect evidence inside the apartment. Investigators took bedding and a rug with blood on them, as well as samples of blood found in a bedroom and bathroom.

Baltes remains held in Kane County Jail on $250,000 bail. She appeared in court Thursday for her first formal appearance since her arrest. She is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 22.

Court records show Baltes with domestic battery and assault arrests, as well as an order of protection against her, within the last six years. She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in 2009 after an incident where she poked holes in a locked bathroom door with a butcher knife as a family member was inside.
