The River Forest Public Library is looking for a new chief.
Library Director Sophia Anastos is stepping down in January due to health issues. She spent more than eight years as director, transforming the library by overseeing the introduction of new programs and additions to collections and digital resources, according to a news release.
Sue Quinn — also with the library for eight years, most recently as assistant director — is now serving as acting director since Anastos is on medical leave; Quinn will become interim director the first week of January, said Claudette Zobel, president of the library’s board.
Zobel said Anastos oversaw an array of improvements, from needed updates to the library building like tuckpointing and sealing, to increased use of technology and digital resources.
“She really has been a stellar director and a fine financial supervisor for the library,” Zobel said. “I guess I’d say she’s been the very soul of the River Forest Public Library.”
Zobel lauded Anastos’ emphasis on customer service and taking care of people. During her tenure, the library saw the development of a new strategic plan, improvements to the physical plant and children’s area, the creation of a space for teens, and addition of the Anne Smedinghoff Garden in front of the library.
Anastos’ vision for library’s future will remain her legacy as director, Zobel said. Recently, Anastos led the effort to create the River Forest Library Foundation, according to the release.
Anastos, who served as director of another small library in the Chicago area before she was hired in River Forest, knew what she wanted the library to be and worked with the board and staff to see that come to fruition within the library’s budget, Zobel said.
“And her impact will be felt for years to come,” Zobel added.
Zobel said they’ll announce the search for a new director at the Jan. 19 board meeting.
“We’re open to all possibilities,” Zobel said.
Those who wish to say goodbye to Anastos and wish her well are invited to attend a celebration being held from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 10 at the library, 735 Lathrop Ave. in River Forest, according to the release.
