Construction is underway on a new business in River Grove with a different look — just in case flooding occurs nearby.

A new Dunkin’ Donuts is currently under construction on River Road just south of Grand Avenue. For years, the area has been prone to flooding, since the road runs parallel to the Des Plaines River.

Construction of the two-story structure should be completed in late January, weather-permitting, and will cost around $900,000, according to Peter Lad, who is overseeing the construction of the building.

Most Dunkin’ Donuts locations don’t have two levels, but Ray Bernero, director of economic development for River Grove, said there’s a reason for it in this location.

“Because the area is prone to flooding, he’s putting in an elevator and storing his food and supplies on the second floor,” Bernero said.

Bernero said the second floor will also act as the office of owner Ashok Pandya, who owns a Dunkin’ Donuts location in River Grove’s Thatcher Woods Shopping Center. The doors to the store will also be made to keep water out as well.

“He’s taking a property that was in a location that was difficult to sell and improve it,” Bernero said. “I’ve been trying to get a Dunkin’ Donuts with a drive-thru in the village for six years.”

Bernero said he hopes this new business will attract even more to businesses to the village.

“I’m looking forward to more development in the village in 2016,” he said.
