The Event: For many civic-minded Chicagoans, the Christmas season doesn’t really begin until after the annual Catholic Charities Spirit of Saint Nicholas Ball. So more than 1,250 supporters were on hand, on Dec. 4 for the event in the Hilton Chicago’s grand ballroom.
Honorary chairmen Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, Rev. Monsignor Michael M. Boland, president/CEO Catholic Charities, with Al and Mary Ann Moschner of Lake Forest, 2015 chair-couple, welcomed guests to the the 26th annual black-tie celebration that benefited Catholic Charities programs reaching nearly 300,000 children in Cook and Lake counties annually.
Cause célebre: “With its spirit of giving, of showing love, compassion,” said Monsignor Michael Boland, “This event really helps a lot of us get into the spirit of the season, reminding us of all the blessings that we have in life and how important it is to reach out and care for those who are most in need.”
“Support ranging from assistance to teaching self-sufficiency,” is how Al Moschner described Catholic Charities work. “Programs that provide a vital safety net in our community, including nutrition, housing, education and mentoring.”
Archbishop Cupich summed up the spirit of evening: “What a great way to start this holy season that reminds us that there should always be room in the inn. Our city, our nation, our world needs this kind of witness of mercy and justice at this particular moment,” said Cupich.
Bottom line: The event raised more than $1.2 million to benefit the Catholic Charities children’s programs. More at catholiccharities.net.
