Brian Scott Wasilenko, 45, lives with his parents in Arlington Heights, according to Jim Hammons, his father. Hammons said he and his wife are regulars at the Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove, and on Dec. 9, both were there for dinner. After eating, Hammons said his wife got sick, so they complained to the owner, Pete Panayiotou.
Panayiotou, who said the Hammons are two of his best customers, agreed to let them take home an extra beef brisket sandwich for their son, Wasilenko.
When his parents returned with the food, Wasilenko bit into his sandwich and got an unpleasant surprise, according to a Buffalo Grove police report.
“He allegedly discovered a small nail within the meat of the sandwich,” the report reads.
Hammons and Panayiotou both described it as a stainless steel construction nail, about an inch and a half long
“I’ve been in this business 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like that,” Panayiotou said. “But then, there’s a first time for everything.”
Panayiotou said it’s “not something that was from my restaurant operation” and has complained to his meat supplier, Sysco Corp. Sysco did not return a call seeking comment.
On Dec. 13, Wasilenko and his mother, Diane Hammons, brought the sandwich and nail to the Buffalo Grove police. As part of normal procedure, Buffalo Grove police check the name of those they encounter in databases looking for arrest warrants.
During that process, police learned then that Wasilenko was wanted in Kane County, according to the report. Buffalo Grove officers arrested him on a warrant for harassment by electronic communication, the report said.
Jim Hammons said the warrant stemmed from Wasilenko texting an ex-girlfriend. Wasilenko has posted the $1,000 bond, and did not return a Friday call seeking comment. Jim Hammons said the strange series of events left him shocked and unhappy.
“It’s unbelievable, how mad I am about this,” he said. “That is the strangest thing that ever happened.”
