When it comes to sports fans and their grammar usage, Chicago has some work to do as a city.
According to a study by Grammarly, fans of the Bulls, White Sox, Bears and Cubs average 5.11 mistakes per 100 words in comments sections of websites. That puts Chicago 12th among 42 cities with at least one NBA, NFL or MLB team.
The top three cities are Memphis (2.47 mistakes), Sacramento (2.52) and San Antonio (2.54). Though to be fair, each of those cities has only team across the three aforementioned leagues. Nashville ranks dead last on the list, as Tennessee Titans fans make 11.20 mistakes per 100 words.
In Chicago, Bulls fans (4.43) have the best grammar, followed by die-hards of the White Sox (4.80), Cubs (5.20) and Bears (6.00).
Across the three leagues, NBA fans (4.50) have been judged to be the best grammar wielders, followed by fans of MLB and the NFL.
Grammarly arrived at its conclusions by collecting comments posted under articles on each official MLB, NBA, and NFL team blog and from official sports team and sports fan websites such as NFL.com and SB Nation. The company used the Grammarly app to identify the errors in the comments, which were then verified and tallied by a team of live proofreaders.
