
Freshman Caleb Swanigan scored 11 of his 19 points during a blistering 56-point first half, and No. 11 Purdue beat short-handed Howard 93-55 Wednesday night in West Lafayette.
Swanigan also had 12 rebounds as the Boilermakers improved to 10-0 for the first time since winning their first 14 games in 2009-10.
The visiting Bison (6-4) lost for just the second time in eight games while playing without Division I scoring leader James “J-Byrd” Daniel, who has a toe injury.
Kendall Stephens added 14 points to Purdue’s balanced attack, and Rapheal Davis had 10. Purdue had assists on 28 of its 34 field goals.
Dalique Mingo led Howard with 14 points, and Marcel Boyd added 12 before fouling out.
Leading 12-11 with 15:14 remaining in the first half, the Boilermakers went on a 36-6 run over the next 10 minutes for a 48-17 lead. The blitz included five 3-pointers from four players and a 3-point play by 7-foot-2 center Isaac Haas.
During its most complete first half of the season, Purdue shot 58 percent from the field (21 of 36), including 7 of 14 from beyond the arc. The Boilermakers had 18 assists and no turnovers in the first 20 minutes, including a career-high five assists from point guard P.J. Thompson, who ended up with nine.
Seven Boilermakers scored at least five points before halftime, while Howard made just eight of 26 first-half shots (30.8 percent).
Purdue continued to build on a 56-24 halftime advantage, leading 70-33 with 13:09 remaining and 80-43 with 7:22 to play.
Indiana 90, IPFW 65: Yogi Ferrell scored a career-high 38 points and Troy Williams had 15 points and a career-best 19 rebounds as Indiana defeated IPFW in Bloomington.
Ferrell hit 12 of 18 shots, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. He was just four points off the all-time scoring record at Assembly Hall, which was 42 by Steve Alford in 1987.
Ferrell, a senior, scored Indiana’s final eight points of the game, including a pair of 3-pointers. His 38 points shattered his previous career high of 30 points against Illinois in the Big Ten opener last season.
Ferrell had a solid line across the board. He had five rebounds and five assists with just two turnovers in 35 minutes. He also made all 10 of his free throws.
Williams was also considerably better than his previous career rebounding best. His previous high was 14 against Northwestern. He had 16 defensive rebounds alone against IPFW. Williams also had a career-high five blocks.

At halftime, Williams had outrebounded IPFW by himself, 13-12.
Robert Johnson added 16 points for Indiana (7-3) and Max Bielfeldt had 11 off the bench. Indiana shot 51.8 percent from the field and held a 51-28 advantage on the boards.
Johnson was IU’s best shooter from deep against IPFW, making all five of his shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Indiana, which leads the nation in field goal percentage, has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 18 of its last 43 games dating back to last season.
IU used an 11-2 run late in the first half to build a 15-point lead at 44-29. The Hoosiers led 48-34 at halftime.
Mo Evans led IPFW (7-4) with 21 points. John Konchar added 14 points for the Mastodons.
