An elderly Oswego woman says she was scammed out of more than $50,000 by a man she met on the Internet, Oswego police said.

According to Oswego police, the woman met the man on Facebook and had been talking to him online and on the telephone since Oct. 7.

During their conversations, the man said he was an engineer from London, police said.

He apparently told the woman that he had traveled to Malaysia where he had been in a bad accident. Police said the man urged the woman to send money to help him out.

Over the next few months, the victim apparently sent $56,000 to the man before realizing she had been duped, police said.

Oswego police are investigating the incident.
